September in Charleston
Welcome September!!!

Well, the summer is winding down, even in a warm place like Charleston, SC. September brings a new high school football season, sees apples appear  at the farmer's market, and a glorious light that streams through the tress in the morning and evenings. The marsh starts to change colors, and tropical storms and hurricanes spice up the weather forecast. This first signal that Fall is near sees us polishing off our leather boots, pulling out the sweatshirts and flannels in anticipation of that first crisp morning. Even after the colorful Spring and Summer months, this new season in the Lowcountry really shines!!!

5 Top Ways to Celebrate Your Mom on Mother's Day in Charleston, SC

On Sunday, families across the nation will gather to celebrate the most important member of the family (IMHO). Whether you call her Mother, Mom, Mama, or Mommy, it is very important to take a day to appreciate and celebrate the person who brought you into the world.  Unfortunately, some of us have experienced losing our Mother, so the day can be bittersweet. But, at any rate, I hope that you can share some quality time to celebrate your mom, a friend that you lean on, your mother-in law, or sister and make the day special.

What Mom wouldn't want to spend Mother's Day in Charleston, SC? While the local opportunities to create colorful family memories are endless, I wanted to share 5 of my favorite ideas for honoring your Mother on her special day. For the overachievers, I would suggest buying Mom some flowers (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Costco are some great last minute options), and possibly making the occasion even more special by ordering a beautiful layer cake (Publix is good and can usually offer 24 hour turn around), or a pastry and her favorite coffee for breakfast in bed.

Here are 5 ideas to celebrate your Mother in Charleston:

1. Tour Magnolia or Middleton Plantation:

Both Plantations are a short drive away from Charleston down scenic Highway 61. Magnolia is probably my favorite, but Middleton offer a nice restaurant and sweeping views of the Ashley River.

2. Lunch at the Folly Beach Pier/Walk to the Morris Island Lighthouse:

Folly Beach has a brand new restaurant on the Pier with a real beach vacation vibe. After lunch, walk the pier (no charge) or head up the beach to Morris Island Lighthouse. A favorite way to stretch our legs as a family on holidays.

3. Lunch at Obstinate Daughter/Poe's Tavern/ Mex 1 Cantina/Beach Afternoon/Ice Cream and Cookies at Beardcats:

There are several yummy, fun restaurants lining Middle Street on Sullivan's Island. Personally, we are late to the party and have not tried the Obstinate Daughter, but it is a local fave for seafood, gourmet pizza and pasta! For an amazing burger, you can't miss funky little Poe's Tavern, but be prepared to wait. Finally, if Mexican food is calling your name, try Mex 1 Coastal Cantina for both the frozen margaritas and the best tacos and bowls east of the Cooper River.

After lunch, hit the beautiful white sands of Sullivan's Island. Try Station 22 to ensure a great view of the lighthouse. Top off the day with ice cream at Beardcats Sweet Shop below the Obstinate Daughter for sweet trees and gelato.

4. Mt. Pleasant Pier Stroll/Milkshakes:

After brunch, take your Mom for a stroll along the Mt. Pleasant Pier under the Ravenel Bridge. The pier is massive, long enough to walk off a heavy brunch or lunch, with benches and swings if you want to sit a while and take in the activity in the harbor. The gift shop offers milkshakes and sundaes at a super reasonable price, and there is also a playground for younger family members. You really could spend and hour or two here.

5. Sunset sailboat Cruise on the Schooner Pride:

What a perfect way to wrap up the weekend. Take Mom on a sunset cruise and knock her socks off!! Holiday cruises sell out quickly, so make sure to buy tickets asap!!! There's nothing as beautiful as watching the sunset over historic downtown Charleston. A great way to grab a quiet moment with your Mom and make a shared memory that will last a lifetime.

Finally, when researching the options for Mother's Day outings, I found that you can buy tickets for   tours and excursions around Charleston at a discount through Expedia!! I was surprised by the variety of options available! Ghost tours, Culinary tours, Carriage Rides, Harbor Cruises, Air Conditioned Bus tours, Scavenger Hunts and even Photography sessions!
