Christmas in Charleston: A Home tour

Hello and happy holiday season! I am linking today with a huge holiday home tour link party courtesy of a great blog that I follow, Life on Virginia Street. Our house is perpetually undergoing some sort of work, but I thought I would share my holiday decor. I love these link parties because you can find lots of great tours in one spot. Perfect for a winter evening's entertainment in front of the fire with a cup of cocoa!

We'll start at our front door. I threw together a simple pine cone swag for the door this morning because the larger one I had done made it difficult to open and shut the front door. It really took on a life of its own.....

See, its huge!

This simple bowl of glass ornaments makes me happy in its simplicity!!

Come on in to the dining room.....

I love this antique sideboard. Its my favorite piece from my Dad's farm.

Our formal and casual living spaces are adjacent to each other, which makes it hard to figure out how to decorate. But it allows a straight open view to the back of the house and the marsh beyond.

In the kitchen, we have a hot cocoa station set up on the wet bar for the kids and tea and coffee for the
adults.

I love this plate that my friend Tonia gave me years ago. Every Christmas it gets a red ribbon for the season. I also love Christmas cacti because they are so easy to grow!!

I ventured into Martha Stewart land and made a couple snow globes....there are little battery-powered lights buried in the snow that come on at night.

Here is our big ole tree that took forever to decorate! We could still use more ornaments!

The mantle

We all seem to hang out more in the family room over the holidays. The fire, the lights of the tree, the proximity of hot cocoa.....its just the perfect place to spend the holiday!!

Thanks for visiting. I would love to see your home tour or photos in the comments below!

Merry Christmas!!

Thanksgiving In Charleston: What's Up Wednesday

Hello friends! Today, I'm trying something new......I'm linking to a bunch of other bloggers for "What's Up Wednesday!" I think it will be fun to share the latest happenings here and hopefully get some comments about what's going on in your world! Here we go!

What We're Eating This Week:
Well, turkey for sure. Unless Chris has an unfortunate accident in the kitchen. Also, we've had steak and turkey tacos for dinner this week.  I'm betting that on Friday after all of the rich comfort Thanksgiving foods, we will be dying for our favorite Mexican restaurant,  Zia Taqueria! The tortilla soup is out of this world!

What I'm Reminiscing About:
This will be our first year without Jack, my stepdad. He always made the holidays special.

What I'm Loving:
There are a bunch of things on my list right now....I'm thinking of doing a favorites post to share them, so stay tuned. Really, it is the simple things that make my life easier, like certain products, the ability to Christmas Shop from the comfort of my couch,  J Crew Factory Flannel Pajamas to keep me warm, and Black Friday Sales that spill over into Cyber Monday!

What I'm Working On:
I worked on catching up the laundry Monday and Tuesday of this week after the soccer-palooza that went on last weekend. Glamorous, I know. The rest of the week will be spent getting the Christmas boxes out of the attic, picking out a tree, hitting the Black Friday sales, and studying more blogging and photography tutorials.

What I'm Listening To:
Christmas music on Sirius Holly, and the Robert Downey Jr,  Michael Buble, and Harry Connick Jr. stations on Pandora.

What I'm Wearing:
Khakis. Seriously........jeans, a flannel shirt and vest with boots.

What I'm Looking Forward To:
Shopping, Decorating and all of the Holiday Events that Charleston has to offer such as:
The Charleston Holiday Farmer's Market
The King Street Holiday Shop and Stroll
20th Annual Christmas Light Parade & Tree Lighting

What I'm Watching:
Not Football. Sorry, guys! Planning to take the kids to see Love The Coopers over the weekend. Love family movie time!!!

So basically, that sums it up. I'd love to know some of your traditions, the things that make the holidays special, the things that make it easier for you and any tips on getting it all done in time to actually enjoy the spirit of the season!

Have a blessed thanksgiving and thank you for reading!!!

Thanksgiving Entertaining!!

It's beginning to look a lot like....Thanksgiving!!!!! I'm already in a festive mood, as Christmas music can be found on the Holly channel on Sirius XM, as well as locally on Y102.5. Black Friday ads are populating my email box and coupons from my favorite retailers are coming via the mail. To top it off, Christmas trees arrived at our Walmart yesterday!! Its official, the holiday season has begun!!!

Today, I wanted to share a roundup of some of my favorite Thanksgiving entertaining ideas that I've found recently on Pinterest. We'll take a quick trip around the web to get you ready for next week's big day and finish with a great pre-black friday sale that's runs until midnight tonight.

First, lets start with cocktails, because why not? Hello Apple Cider Mimosas !!! Easy recipe, gorgeous photos!!!!

Now, let's talk briefly about the bird. When looking for advice for creating a successful holiday meal, you can't go wrong with Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman! Just do what she says and brine the turkey. You will be happy that you did!'

We all know that the turkey is the star of the show, but here is a roundup of some amazing side dishes that will shine in their own light on your Thanksgiving table.

To set the scene, I am loving organic tablescapes created from natural items combined with simple household items we already own.

I hope you are inspired to try some new things this year. My grocery list includes an organic turkey, or maybe just a breast, brussel sprouts and butternut squash, some fresh flowers for the table, white candles, and a bag of the cinnamon scented pinecones to put out as we transition into Christmas decor.

Make sure to check out J. Crew Factory online tonight for their 50% off everything and free shipping event! Some of the kid's clothes are great deals and there are lots of great holiday-appropriate items for the grownups too.

Veteran's Day Sales: Mix-n-Match Girl's/Boy's Old Navy Holiday 2015

Happy Veteran's Day friends! Today, we are honoring the Vets in our family, including my father  (WWI) and step father (Korean War), while celebrating Chris with dinner at California Dreaming. I'm very proud of all of my men!!

While checking out the Veteran's Day sales online today, I ran across a great deal at Old Navy! We're talking 40% off your purchase and free 3-day shipping on purchases over $75. So I put together a little shopping trip to replace some of the items I am cleaning out of the kids' closets this week. First, I put together some items for girls that can be mixed and matched for outfits during the holiday season. Most items are eligible for 40% off at checkout with the code Holiday. (I'm adding my Ebates link to my shopping trip, and tonight I will receive 6%back on top of the Old Navy promotion)

So, there you have it.  Hope you find some items to update the kids' closets for the holiday season, without breaking the bank! Old Navy has really been killing it this year, and I've really found a lot of good stuff lately. I will have to do a future post on their "Rockstar" jeans, because they really do rock!! Also, I am working on adding affiliate links to my posts, which will make my posts "shoppable" for you, while affording me a commission per click in the range of 3-5 cents. Exciting!! This time the boys collection should work like that. Let me know what you think. I love to shop and enjoy sharing good deals with my friends!!

Take care!!

~Michelle

Update 11/12: Today Old Navy is offering a different discount good online through 11/14. This morning when I clicked on my Ebates was down to 2%, so it pays to check that through the day if you are planning on ordering.
